Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Northeast State awards Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to recognize and record the efforts of individuals who successfully complete non-credit courses, workshops, seminars, and specially formatted education offerings. The recording of the CEU on the college transcript provides a permanent record of participation in non-degree coursework. Continuing education units may not be applied toward any Northeast State degree or credit certificate.

The Continuing Education Unit is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education course activity under the sponsorship and capable direction of a qualified instructor. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are computed on the basis of one CEU for each 10 hours of contact. Units are recorded to one decimal point. Thus, a student enrolled in a non-degree activity which meets for a total of 12 hours would earn 1.2 CEUs.

The Admissions and Records Office maintains all CEU records.

Registration - A student may register for any non-credit course or activity by completing the Registration Form for Non-Credit Classes, Seminars and Workshops by phone, fax, mail, in person or e-mail at least five days before the first class session.

Admission Requirements -Students taking non-credit courses are not required to follow the same admissions procedures as those students in degree courses. Registration is continuous, convenient and customer-oriented with classes starting throughout the year. Students will not be permitted to register until the following encumbrances have been satisfactorily addressed:
Fees or other financial obligations are owed to the college;
Library books or materials are overdue; or
Previous disciplinary action by the college prohibits enrollment.

Fees - Tuition and fees for continuing education classes are printed in the schedule of classes. The cost of each non-credit activity is calculated to cover the cost of the instructor’s salary, administrative costs, and class supplies, except where noted. Most course fees cover the cost of course materials. Where applicable, the course citation will include information on any other materials required for the course.

Students registering for non-credit courses are not assessed application fees, technology fees, and late fees, except where noted. State employee, senior citizen and disabled fee waiver policies do not apply to non-credit courses and programs. Non-credit classes do not meet the federal requirements for financial aid or most Veteran’s benefits.

Refunds - Refunds will be granted when a request to withdraw for a continuing reduction course or activity is received by the Community Education office, in written form, at least five (5) working days prior to the first class meeting. Refunds will not be granted once a scheduled class has begun. Refunds will also be granted for each course or activity canceled by the college. This policy does not apply to Ed2Go online courses.

Books and Supplies - Most courses require materials and supplies. If materials are included in the cost of the course, the instructor will provide these during the first class meeting. Where applicable, the course citation will include information on the materials required for the course.

Class Cancellation/Postponement - The Office of Community Education reserves the right to cancel or postpone a class before the first meeting when the enrollment established by the division does not reach a minimum. This decision is made five (5) working days before the first class session.

The office may also limit enrollment, split or combine classes, change location when necessary, and reassign qualified instructors when it is necessary. Charges for cancelled classes will be automatically refunded.

Cancellation/Postponement of Individual Class Sessions - If an instructor must cancel a class session, he or she must notify the Division of Community Education and all students enrolled in the class. The instructor is responsible for arranging a makeup session that will accommodate the schedules of all students enrolled in the class and the college’s schedule of available classrooms.

College Closings - Unless otherwise noted, non-credit courses, workshops, and seminars will follow the published campus holiday schedule and any announced closures resulting from inclement weather.

Registration Closing Dates - Early registration with payment is required to ensure enrollment. Class enrollment must meet the minimum number of participants required to cover all course expenses. The closing date for registration is five working days before the start of the class unless otherwise stated. Classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment five (5) working days before the start of the class are subject to cancellation. Unless indicated, registration remains open until the first class session.
