Programs and Services

Adult Education

Adult Education/High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma (formerly known as the GED®)

The purpose of the Adult Education/High School Equivalency (HiSet) Diploma program is to deliver educational services to adults who are over the age of 17 (unless granted an exception) lacking a high school diploma and no longer under compulsory attendance to public high school. The program covers an eight (8) county area, where adults are assessed to determine their level of education and provided instruction to improve their skills in math, science, social studies, reading writing and employability. This instruction is designed to equip the student with the knowledge necessary to receive a High School Equivalency Diploma and enter employment and/or post-secondary education.

English as a Second Language (ESL) - The English as a Second Language (ESL) program serves adults whose primary language is not English. The program provides instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to help learners develop the English proficiency needed for everyday life, employment, and academic success. Classes are offered at multiple proficiency levels, from beginning to advanced, and integrate civics education and workforce readiness skills. Upon reaching advanced levels, students may transition into the High School Equivalency (HiSet) Diploma program or pursue postsecondary or career pathways.

Workforce Development Initiatives (WDI) - WDIs were created to offer the next step or pathway beyond a HiSet.  Students may work in a variety of short term certifications and/or receive assistance in becoming a degree seeking student at the college.  Within WDIs, the adult education group can assist with post-secondary learning support for students or local industries where basic education skill set needs improvement for a better trained workforce.

Apprenticeships - Apprenticeships sponsored by Northeast State Community College provide employers with a structured training process following the U.S. Department of Labor Standards for Registered Apprenticeship. Each apprentice completing a Registered Apprenticeship is awarded a nationally and industry recognized USDOL certificate of completion. Northeast State will complete all necessary paperwork and documentation for employers sponsored.

Advanced Manufacturing and Technical Skills - Program offerings at Northeast State’s Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) include, but are not limited to, mechanical, electrical, machine tool technology, welding, basic instrumentation, mechatronics, and technician training and certification by the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC), and National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) craft training and certification.

Healthcare Programs - Northeast State’s Workforce Solutions office delivers short-term career training courses which prepare participants to take the national certification exam in Phlebotomy, Clinical Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Billing and Coding. American Heart Association certification courses are offered in Basic Life Support and Heartsaver.

Online Courses and Programs - Web-based industrial skills, business and professional development, computer training, short-term career training, and personal enrichment skills are available through RCAM and Workforce Solutions.

Continuing Education Information and Policies

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Northeast State awards Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to recognize and to record the efforts of individuals who successfully complete continuing education courses, workshops, seminars, and specially formatted educational offerings. The recording of the CEU on the college transcript provides a permanent record of participation in non-degree coursework. Continuing Education Units may not be applied toward any Northeast State degree or credit certificate. Continuing education courses may be considered for prior learning assessment (PLA).

The Continuing Education Unit is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education course activity under the sponsorship and capable direction of a qualified instructor. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are computed on the basis of one CEU for each 10 hours of contact. Units are recorded to one decimal point. Thus, a student enrolled in a non-degree activity which meets for a total of 12 hours would earn 1.2 CEUs.

The Admissions and Records Office maintains all CEU records.

Registration - A student may register online for any continuing education course or activity by visiting https://NortheastState.edu/WorkforceSolutions.
