The Paramedic degree will provide individuals with advanced level knowledge and skills associated with pre-hospital care during illness and traumatic injuries. The paramedic renders basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene of their injuries or illnesses and continues this treatment while transporting these patients to the hospital.
Admission, Retention, and Graduation Requirements
Admission Requirements (General)
A student desiring to pursue the associate of applied science degree in Paramedic must:
- Apply, meet the general admission requirements, and be accepted by Northeast State Community College.
- Indicate Paramedic as the desired major on the Northeast State application form.
- See a faculty advisor from the Health Professions area prior to registering for classes and obtain faculty approval to register.
- Complete all required learning support courses prior to making application for the Paramedic program.
Paramedic Program Application Requirements
A student who has completed the above referenced requirements is eligible to apply for admission to the Paramedic program. The student must be currently licensed as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician by the State of Tennessee. To apply for admission into the Paramedic program, the student must complete an application and follow any additional program admissions guidelines.
Admission to the Paramedic Program
- Appear for a personal interview with the Emergency Medical Technology Paramedic Advisory Committee whose membership consists of:
- Dean of Health Professions
- Program Director of the Paramedic program
- Representatives from the local communities of interest
- Paramedic program Medical Director
- Vice President for Academic Affairs (ex officio)
- A representative from the State Division of Emergency Medical Services
- A local EMS and Fire Service Director
- A registered nurse from a local healthcare facility
- A current Paramedic student
- Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the basic knowledge and skills of an AEMT and possess the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation.
- Submit evidence of good moral character. Such evidence shall be two recent (within the preceding 12 months) original letters from medical professionals attesting to the applicant’s personal character.
- Successfully complete the Advanced EMT assessment examination and hold a current Tennessee license as an AEMT.
- Transfer students: individuals who have attended other colleges and desire to transfer into the Northeast State Paramedic program will be considered on an individual basis. Transfer requests should be directed to the Dean of Health Professions. Transfer students must meet the same standards and criteria as others desiring to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree in Paramedic at Northeast State.
A student who has been dismissed or has withdrawn from the Paramedic program may be readmitted. The following apply:
- Only one readmission to the Paramedic program is permitted. This readmission must occur within a one year time frame.
- A student must apply to the Paramedic Program Director for readmission at least one semester before the desired date of return.
- A student must request readmission in writing and appear before the Paramedic Advisory Committee.
- A student repeating a Paramedic course must repeat both the didactic and clinical components of the course.
- A student may be readmitted only if space is available.
- If additional readmissions are sought, the entire admission requirements must be completed.
To remain in good standing once admitted to the Paramedic program, the student must:
- Adhere to Northeast State, Paramedic program, department, and clinical affiliate policies.
- Maintain a “C” or better in each Paramedic course.
- Satisfactorily complete the didactic, clinical, and/or skills requirements of each Paramedic course. Failure in any segment will result in a grade of “F” for the entire course.
- Submit to the Paramedic Program Director written evidence, on the appropriate form, of a physical examination taken within the past six months showing the applicant is in good physical health and possesses no physical disabilities that would impede the applicant’s ability to fulfill the functions and responsibilities of the Paramedic. Any limitations in the individual’s ability to perform adequately will require additional documentation.
- Exhibit safe clinical behavior.
- Demonstrate professional, ethical, and legal conduct.
- Purchase professional liability insurance ($1,000,000/$3,000,000).
- Maintain CPR certification.
- Sign a statement prior to admission indicating he/she is drug free and submit to a drug test if requested by the Dean of Health Professions at any time during the program. A positive drug test is grounds for immediate dismissal.
- Students must comply with policies of clinical affiliates concerning criminal background checks and must assume associated costs.
Program graduation requirements include the successful completion of all courses with a minimum grade of “C” in each course.
Additional courses may be required to overcome deficiencies in English, mathematics, and reading.
General Education Courses
Paramedic program is a selective admission program. Completing the general education requirements does not guarantee admission.
