Radiologic Technology

The Radiologic Technology* program provides the general education core, program specific courses, and the clinical practicum to prepare students for a career as a Radiologic Technologist (Radiographer). Radiographers work in a variety of medical imaging settings, including hospitals, diagnostic imaging centers, urgent care clinics, outpatient surgery centers, and physician’s offices. Medical imaging represents the second-largest Health Science profession in the nation.

The curriculum framework is guided by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists Radiography Curriculum - 2022. The curriculum includes specialized radiography courses, along with studies in basic sciences, mathematics, and general education. Instruction takes place both on campus and at affiliated clinical education settings.

Upon successful completion of the program courses, students are eligible to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam in radiography. Passing this exam qualifies them to become a Registered Technologist in Radiography, earning the credential R.T.(R)(ARRT).

Admission, Retention, and Graduation Requirements


Admission Requirements (General)


A student desiring to pursue the associate of applied science degree in radiologic technology must follow the general admissions requirements .

The Radiologic Technology program is a selective admission program. Completing the general education requirements does not guarantee admission.

Radiologic Technology Program Application Requirements


After being accepted into the College, students must meet the specific admission criteria for the Radiologic Technology Program, as outlined in the section below. Applications are accepted annually with a deadline in mid-October, with selected applicants beginning coursework in the spring semester. The Radiologic Technology program spans four semesters, and upon successful completion, students are awarded an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Radiologic Technology.

Please note the timeline on application posting and deadline information for each cohort.

  • January cohort start: will post to the radiologic technology homepage in March with an application deadline in October.

Prior to applying for acceptance into the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Radiologic Technology program an applicant must:

  1. Meet the general admission requirements as noted in the Admissions Requirements located above, and submit an application to Northeast State Community College.
  2. Be accepted by Northeast State Community College.
  3. Indicate the associate of applied science degree in Radiologic Technology as the desired major on the Northeast State application form.*
  4. Seek advisement from the student’s assigned advisor to establish an academic plan of study.
  5. Complete or be currently enrolled in all required learning support courses prior to applying to the associate of applied science degree radiologic technology program.
    1. BIOL 2010: Anatomy and Physiology I; ENGL 1010: Composition I; MATH 1530: Probability and Statistics, and HRPR 1000 Introduction to Health-Related Professions.
  6. Achieve a grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the associate of applied science degree radiologic technology program.
  7. Ensure all BIOL courses contain lecture and laboratory components and are obtained within ten years of the first semester of RADT coursework.
  8. Possess a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.0 after completing a minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework required for the associate of applied science degree radiologic technology program OR possess a minimum ACT score of 23 in each of the following areas: Math, Reading, Science, and English.
  9. Attend the Northeast State Radiologic Technology Information Session.
  10. Complete the Radiologic Technology Program Application process. Submission of all requirements must be received by the established deadline date.
  11. Complete the Minimum Admissions Requirement (MAR) review conducted by the program.

* As this program is a selective-admissions program, students will be initially enrolled in the Associate of Science in Pre-Allied Health degree program. Once a student makes application and is accepted into a selective-admissions program, they will be enrolled into that specific program.

Admission to the Radiologic Technology Program


After the application deadline, individual files for each applicant will be prepared and provided to the Radiologic Technology Admissions Committee.  

  1. Selection of each class will be made by the Radiologic Technology Admissions Committee whose membership consists of:
    1. Dean of Health Professions.
    2. Program Director of the Radiologic Technology Program.
    3. Representatives from the local communities of interest.
    4. Radiologic Technology Program Faculty.
    5. Vice President for Academic Affairs (ex officio).
  2. Students will be evaluated on cumulative GPA, number of general education credit hours completed toward the A.A.S Radiography degree, grades earned in required sciences, math, and HRPR 1000 courses, and the interview scoring by the Radiologic Technology Admissions Committee. (Evaluation criteria will be made available to each student during the Mandatory Information Session process and the Minimum Admission Requiement review).
  3. Individuals selected for the class will be notified in writing of acceptance into the program. Students notified of acceptance into the program must return the acceptance form, by the date specified, indicating intent to be included in the class. Students who do not respond will have their positions filled by other applicants selected by the Radiologic Technology Program Director from the list recommended by the Radiologic Technology Admissions Committee.
  4. Students not selected for admission may reapply for a subsequent class.
  5. Transfer students - Individuals who have attended other colleges and desire to transfer into the Northeast State Radiologic Technology program will be considered on an individual basis. Transfer requests should be directed to the Dean of Health Professions. Transfer students must meet the same standards and criteria as others desiring to pursue an associate of applied science degree in Radiologic Technology at Northeast State Community College.

Acceptance to the Radiologic Technology Program


Rationale for Policy: Due to pre-determined admittance numbers and limited clinical availability, radiologic technology has specific admission criteria, and application does not guarantee admission into the program. Selection into the radiologic technology program is determined through an objective and standardized process. Applications for the Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology at Northeast State Community College will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Candidates will be ranked based on predetermined, weighted criteria to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.

Notification of Selection to the Radiologic Technology Program


Each individual making application to the Northeast State Community College associate of applied science radiologic technology program will receive written notification. Applicants selected for admission must return the Intent to Enroll form to the director of radiologic technology by the date and time specified. Included in the Intent to Enroll Forms are the dates and times for the mandatory radiologic technology student orientation. If the Intent to Enroll Form is not returned by the specific date and time or if the student does not attend the mandatory radiologic technology student orientation, the applicant’s offer for admission will be rescinded, and the applicant’s file will become inactive. These positions will be filled by other applicants selected by the director of radiologic technology based on the ranking list.

Applicants not selected for admission may reapply for a subsequent class.

Retention and Progression Requirements for the Radiologic Technology Program


Rationale for Policy: Retention and progression requirements established by radiologic technology ensure optimal proficiency and promotion of safe student interactions with patients.

To remain in good standing once admitted to the Radiologic Technology program, the student must:

  1. Adhere to all Northeast State, Radiologic Technology program, department, and clinical affiliate policies.
  2. Maintain a 2.0 GPA or better in the Radiologic Technology program.
  3. Earn a minimum grade of “C” in each associate of applied science course.
  4. Satisfactorily complete the theory, clinical, and skills requirements of each Radiologic Technology course.
  5. Earn a minimum grade of “C” in each component (lecture, lab, and clinical) of each radiologic technology (RADT) course.
    1. “Unsatisfactory” performance in the laboratory or clinical component will result in a grade of “F” for the course.
    2. Clinical performance must be rated as satisfactory according to the clinical evaluation tool in order to pass the course regardless of the test scores.
    3. Earning less than a minimum grade of “C” in any one component (lecture, lab, or clinical) of a radiologic technology course will result in a grade of “F” for the course.
  6. Radiologic technology students are allowed to retake no more than two RADT courses during their progression through the AAS Radiologic Technology curriculum. Failure or withdrawal of a third RADT course will result in the inability to apply for readmission to the Radiologic Technology Program.
  7. Radiologic technology students are allowed no more than two attempts in each RADT course. Failure or withdrawal of the second repeated RADT course will result in the inability to apply for readmission to the Radiologic Technology Program.
  8. Submit to the Radiologic Technology Program Director written evidence, on the appropriate form, of a physical examination within the past six months showing the applicant is in good physical health and possesses no physical disabilities that would impede the applicant’s ability to fulfill the functions and responsibilities of the radiologic technologist. Any limitations in the individual’s ability to perform adequately will require additional documentation.
  9. Exhibit safe clinical behavior; have no documented “critical incidents” in clinical practicum sites.
  10. Demonstrate professional, ethical, and legal conduct.
  11. Maintain all affiliated clinical education settings requirements.
  12. Purchase professional liability insurance ($1,000,000 to $3,000,000) and maintain it throughout the program.
  13. Maintain American Heart Association CPR certification.
  14. Sign a statement prior to admission indicating the student is drug free and submit to a drug test if requested by the Dean of Health Professions at any time during the program. A positive drug test is grounds for immediate dismissal.
  15. Students must comply with policies of clinical affiliates concerning drug testing and criminal background checks and must assume associated costs.

If any retention or progression requirement is not met, the student will be unable to successfully complete course, program, and/or clinical agency requirements, leading to the inability to progress in the radiologic technology program.

Readmission Policies


A student who has been dismissed or has withdrawn from the Radiologic Technology program may be readmitted. The following apply:

  1. Only one readmission to the Radiologic Technology program is permitted. This readmission must occur within a one-year time frame.
  2. A student must apply to the Radiologic Technology Program Director for readmission at least one semester before the desired date of return.
  3. A student must request readmission in writing and appear before and be approved by the Radiologic Technology Admissions Committee.
  4. A student who fails to maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA may be considered for readmission only after removing all grades of less than a “C” in all required general education courses.
  5. A student repeating a Radiologic Technology course must repeat both the theory and clinical components of the course.
  6. A student dismissed from the Radiologic Technology Program due to an ethical violation or behavioral misconduct will not be eligible for readmission.
  7. A student may be readmitted only if space is available.

Program Graduation Requirements


  1. Successful completion of all didactic and clinical components of the program.
  2. Achieve a minimum grade of “C” in each course within the Radiologic Technology program.
  3. Complete and pass all clinical competencies, including the mandatory and elective competencies required by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), and the NeSCC Radiologic Technology Program-specific competencies, with approval from the Program Director.
  4. Document the completion and passing of the ten general patient care procedures required by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  5. Complete and document 100% of the program’s assigned clinical practicum hours.
  6. Meet the ethical and behavioral standards of the Radiologic Technology Program and the college.
  7. Successfully complete the comprehensive written final examination for the RADT 2385 Radiographic Capstone course with a minimum grade of 75%.
  8. Submit the college’s application for graduation by the posted deadline for the term listed in the Academic Calendar .
  9. Complete all required courses and attain the required number of credits for graduation.
  10. Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, both in NeSCC coursework and the Radiologic Technology Program.
  11. Meet the 25% residency requirement set by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), meaning at least 25% of credits towards the degree must be earned at NeSCC.
  12. Fulfill all financial and other obligations to the college.

Learning Support


Additional courses may be required to overcome deficiencies in English, mathematics, and reading.

The Radiologic Technology program is a selective admission program. Application does not guarantee admission.

Additional Information


Students must be accepted into the Radiologic Technology program to register for any RADT courses.

*Courses can be taken prior to acceptance in the Radiologic Technology program. See online catalog for approved courses for General Education: Humanities/Fine Arts elective and Behavioral / Social Science elective.
**BIOL 2020: Human Anatomy and Physiology II. If this course is not completed before starting the Radiologic Technology program, it MUST be taken and passed with a minimum grade of “C” during the first semester of enrollment in order to advance to the next semester.
